Building Principal Capacity and Engagement for Reforms Principal Role

The Reform Support Network (RSN), sponsored by the U.S, Department of Education, and was formed to support Race to the Top grantees as they implemented reforms in education policy and practice.  Additionally, the RSN supported states learning from each other, building their capacity for sustainability of reform efforts, and sharing promising practices from the collective RTTT initiatives.  

This document enumerates four areas in which state leaders can support districts and schools to support principals as they prepare to meet continuing challenges in their role as instructional leader.

The four areas include: Building a Culture, Distributing Leadership, Defining the Principal Role as Instructional Leader and Talent Manager, and Providing for Professional Learning and Management.  Included under each area are online resources and state or district examples.

This brief article can provide a starting point for states which are continually searching for ways to improve support for building level leaders.
