The Council of Chief State School Officers is pleased to share with you the draft National Educational Leadership Preparation (NELP) standards for your review. These standards, aligned to the 2015 Practice Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL), are meant to establish performance expectations for beginning level building and district leaders, and specify what novice leaders and program graduates should know and be able to do as a result of their completion of a high quality educational leadership preparation program. Once approved, the preparation standards will replace the 2011 Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) standards and will be used to guide program design, accreditation review, and state program approval.

The standards development committee, chaired by Dr. Michelle Young Executive Director of the University Council for Educational Administration, included practicing leaders, professional association representatives, educational leadership faculty, educational leadership preparation program leaders and college leadership. Committee members were selected based on the stakeholders they represented as well as the expertise they brought to the committee.

We encourage you to share these two sets of draft standards, and are asking for the completion of feedback surveys (links below) by Sunday, May 22, 2016.
