A powerful part of this week's national Summit on Educator Effectiveness is the time dedicated to state team breakout sessions. Throughout the Summit, state teams have the opportunity to meet in facilitated work sessions. There will be time devoted to perfecting theories of action, reflecting on information shared at the Summit, meeting with experts on focused issues of interests to the state teams, and developing plans for next steps following the Summit.
In addition, to take advantage of the collaborative nature of SCEE, state teams will have time to work directly with other states in a small-group session. Here they will be able to share their work, receive feedback, hear what other states are working on, and provide counsel to their colleagues.
Though SCEE staff are offering protocols and providing facilitators for all of the state team breakout sessions, we have encouraged facilitators to be flexible in meeting individual state team goals, even if it means straying from the "script." Team leads will be meeting with their facilitators today [CS1] in order to forecast the activities and plan for customized goals.
For those of you who will not be attending the Summit, we will be inviting states to blog about their experiences and conversations in these meetings, and especially to share their theories of action and action plans.
Following are the planned state team breakout sessions.
Wednesday, May 2, 2012
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. State Team Breakout Sessions
Members will identify themes that resonated with them during Ramona Pierson's opening keynote and how these themes connect to their experiences as change agents. Also within this session, state teams will consider how their theory of action can serve them as they plan their journey from the SCEE base camp to the summit of educator effectiveness. Time will be provided to prepare for the cross-state discussions that will occur later in the day. Teams are invited to post their theory of action to the Summit 2012 SCEE collaboration site file cabinet HERE .
3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. State Sharing Breakout Sessions
In this breakout, teams are grouped in pairs and triads and will use a consultancy protocol for engaging in collaborative inquiry. The state teams will take turns sharing their theory of action and presenting a question or challenge they are facing. Facilitators will guide the group through a process in which the responding states ask probing questions, generate ideas, and contribute to a dynamic discussion that will stretch the thinking of the entire group.

During this final team breakout session, state teams will use an action planning protocol to develop specific plans to accomplish the strategies identified in their theories of action. Thank you for this update Holly and for guiding those of us who can’t be at the Summit, to engage in the State Blogs... I'm anxious to see CA's Theory, as are many of my colleagues. The work you've posted is inspiring and promising.
